| Summary | In the year one thousand seven hundred and five since Christ Our Lord Arabic printing appeared in the Orient, in the city of Aleppo of the land of Syria […]. [It was introduced] by the hand of Aliksandrūs from the Maronite millet, who is also called Ibn al-Zughbī, and by the hand of Samʿān from the Melkite millet, who is also called Ibn Zākhir al-Ṣāyigh. The two did the printing of these letters expertly, after making many efforts. The first book that the two printed was the Psalter of the Prophet David. They began printing it on the fifteenth day of August, in the mentioned year. It took them about years to set up the instruments for the aforementioned print. The priest Jibrāʾīl b. Farḥāt, the Maronite monk from Aleppo, wrote it with his ephemeral hand on the aforementioned date. I saw what I mentioned with my own eyes and I saw some of the instruments and letters, how wonderful they were! |
