Summary | It is finished by the help of our Lord and God, this book of the order of ordinations, which contains the consecration of the altar with chrism, and the ordination of deacons, and priests, and the clothing of monks [...] But this book was begun and finished on the day of the Sabbath, in the blessed month of Kanun I, the 11th in it [...] In the year 1880 of the Greeks and of the ascension of Christ our Lord and God the year 1538 [a later hand has added a date from the birth of Christ below]. But this book was written in the very blessed city of Gazarta Zabdayta (Cizre), which is positioned and built on the bank of the river Tigris [...] may the Lord protect it by the prayer of Mart Maryam Mother of Christ our Saviour [...]. It was written in the days of the father of fathers and chief of shepherds [...] Mar Eliya, catholicos patriarch of the East and of all inhabited borders of the orthodox Nestorians, may he be strengthened in all victory for the edification of the church by the support of He who chose him; and in the days of the splendid and wonderful offshoot and marvellous and fair sprout, who blossomed from a blessed root, and sprouted from a blessed root, Mar Gabriel bishop of Gazarta and of its district, may he be protected by He who chose him for His service, Amen. He wrote, that is corrupted and defiled these pages [...] ʿAṭaya, that is Yahbalaha, who by grace is a priest, son of the priest Faraj the pilgrim, son of the deacon Marqos, of Alqosh, and today they live in the aforementioned city of Gazarta (Cizre). [Conventional request to readers not to blame him for any mistakes they find]. This Order was written for the vigilant and careful shepherd, gentle, pleasant and patient, gentle spirit and man of peace, the blessed in body and in soul, Mar Ḥenanishoʿ, bishop, metropolitan, and keeper-of-the-see [nāṭar kursyā, i.e. designated patriarchal successor] of Addai and Mari, and brother of the aforementioned Catholicos, from the village of Tella, in the land of Marga, which is in Rūstāqā [...] May Christ grant him long life [...] for the glory of Christianity, and pride/honour of the Nestorians. [...] Ends with request for Christ to have mercy on the weak scribe and his fathers and brothers of body and soul. |
